The Tradition of Stepping Moves from College Campus to the Church

The tradition of stepping has been popularized by Black fraternities and sororities and combines different elements of dance, singing, and rhythm. As a result, step shows (also known as greek shows, yard shows, and stomp shows) were only found on college campuses. Since then, the tradition has expanded to be enjoyed by churchgoers as well. In addition to choirs, dance troupes, and mimes, church groups also show praise in the form of stepping.
Stepping can be described as a combination of signing, dancing, and rhythm. There is a military styled precision in the step routines performed by each organization. The popularity of stepping comes from an appreciation for the coordination and emotional interaction of the performers. Songs and chants originally used by black fraternities and sororities can be easily translated into gospel songs and bible verses. The migration from college campuses to churches also is a sign of the progression of the members of Black fraternities and sororities. It is often members who teach the step routines to the performers. Performances are often performed by childrens groups, which helps teaching the message while improving coordination and
This trend will continue to grow as the art form of stepping continues. Stepping has become an entertaining way for church groups to share messages, teach lessons, and show praise. The high caliber routines benefit not only those watching the performance, but also reinforces the message for the performers. Influenced and promoted by Black fraternities and sororities, stepping has grown from being isolated to college campuses to another important part of the Black experience – the church.
